چکیده

background: it has been shown that serum total homocysteine (hc) is a risk factor for vascular disease which characterizes endothelial damage in the general and in the end-stage renal disease (esrd) population as well. whether n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids decrease homocysteine (hcy) level has been a subject of controversy. methods: renal transplant patients were randomized in 2 groups and received 6 months of dietary supplementation with 6 g/day of fish oil or placebo. homocysteine level and total cholesterol level were measured. results: in 40 renal transplant recipients , increase in homocysteine level was greater after fish oil administration but not significantly, total cholesterol was decreased significantly. conclusion: based on these data omega3 fatty acids supplementation doesn’t decrease serum homocysteine in renal transplant recipients but decreases total cholesterol level.

Unusual manifestation of cutaneous Leishmaniasis in a renal transplant recipient

Cutaneous leishmaniasis may present as unusual manifestations in renal transplant patients receiving immunosuppressive therapy. This misleading presentation, may delay the diagnosis and treatment. Moreover special caution must be taken in renal transplant recipients because of possible interactions between antimony compounds and cyclosporine metabolites. We report a 45-year old man with 5 years...

Omega-3 and serum homocysteine level in hemodialysis patients.

Cardiovascular disease is a leading cause of death in end-stage renal disease patients. One of the well-known independent risk factors is hyperhomocysteinemia. The prevalence of hyperhomocysteinemia is more than 90% in hemodialysis patients.1,2 There are studies that have shown folate and vitamin B6 can decrease the level of homocysteine. However, the effect of these supplements for secondary p...

Effect of omega-3 supplementation on serum level of homocysteine in hemodialysis patients.

INTRODUCTION Patients with end-stage renal disease are at a high risk of adverse cardiovascular events. Elevated level of homocysteine is an important risk factor for cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in dialysis patients. There are some strategies for reduction of serum homocysteine level in these patients, including folate and vitamin supplementation. The aim of the present study was to ...

Opportunistic infections in a renal transplant recipient

With the present progress in transplantation procedures, there is an improvement in patient and allograft survival. However, the immunosuppression necessary to sustain the allograft predisposes these transplant recipients to infection, which is now a significant cause of morbidity and mortality. We describe a case of a 30-year-old renal transplant recipient with two opportunistic infections, na...

Viral infection in the renal transplant recipient.

The viral infections with greatest impact on the renal transplant recipient are those due to cytomegalovirus, Epstein-Barr virus, and the two hepatitis viruses, hepatitis B and C. All of these are modulated by the administered immunosuppressive therapy, and all have both direct and indirect effects on the transplant patient. The direct effects are the infectious disease clinical syndromes that ...
